Common Singularity
03.11.20
While not openly labelled as such, both the façade and the balcony are inherent epitomes of the commons. Threshold between private and public, the balcony inserts itself as a peculiar element in a liminal space that belongs to both, that belongs to none. Topos of amorous flirtation, the balcony is a privileged but ambiguous space that brings lovers closer while keeping them apart. Transgressive boundary, the balcony declares the expression of the individual self as part of the city. Anti-gravitational apparatus, the balcony articulates the complex relationship between inside and outside, up and down. In theatrical space, the balcony is also subject to a regime of visibility, a space of stage, where power and vulnerability are on display
Even though the program behind claims otherwise, the balcony belongs to an imperatively common space. If not by use, as a visual common. Physically bounded, its territorial claims extend further than the defined space. Liminal space at the brink of the façade and street, the balcony is a peculiar threshold where nothing can happen without possibly being seen.
