Stefan Gruber is an Associate Professor of Architecture and Urbanism at Carnegie Mellon University, where he chairs the Master of Urban Design.

His design, research, and curatorial practice is situated at the intersection between architecture and urbanism with a particular focus on spatial justice and the political as articulated through the negotiation of top-down planning and bottom-up transformations of cities. Recent projects explore spaces and practices of commoning seeking to build community ownership and resilience beyond the paradigms of the market or the state.

Gruber curated the ifa-exhibition An Atlas of Commoning in collaboration with ARCH+ and guest-edited the eponymous publication. He also co-authored Spaces of Commoning, Artistic Research, and the Utopia of the Everyday (Sternberg, 2016), Big! Bad? Modern: (Park Books, 2015) and The Report (MAK, Museum for Applied Arts Vienna, 2015) with STEALTH.unlimited and Paul Currion.

His work has been published and exhibited internationally and recognized by the Graham Foundation, the ULI, the ACSA, the Academy Schloss Solitude, the Viennese Technology and Science Fund (WWTF), and a Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky Prize amongst others.
